She's a Badass: Grace Sullivan, Founder, Eco Copy Grace

In this month’s She’s a Badass interview, I had the pleasure of interviewing Grace Sullivan, Founder of Eco Copy Grace. Grace and I first met when she signed up for TNN's online group classes. I also had the pleasure of having her edit a couple of fun projects (like this blog post, this blog post, and this blog post!).

Keep reading to find out who Grace is, how she manages her business, a 9-5 gig, and her health and wellness.

Introduce yourself! Who are you? What do you do?

Hey! I’m Grace Sullivan. I’m a lifelong writer with a passion and curiosity for storytelling, and I strive to uplift people and businesses by helping them find their voices and confidently tell their stories.

I'm a brand strategist and copywriter, and I serve climate-friendly and values-based brands with big ideas. My primary focus is landing pages and email campaigns.

Why did you get into copywriting?!

It’s actually a pretty random story! I had always loved the idea of running my own business, and at the beginning of the pandemic, I was working a mat-leave contract as a communications manager.

I was about three months out from my contract expiring and knew that I’d have to find work. Since it was the beginning of the pandemic, I was obviously doom scrolling through YouTube one day and came across Alex Cattoni, a copywriter and business owner with her own YouTube channel. After going down the rabbit hole and watching her videos, I really liked her vibe, signed up for her newsletter, and started binging on her free resources.

Three months later, my work contract expired and I decided to try copywriting as a way to supplement my income while I started my job search….and here I am, almost three years later.

How does fitness and nutrition fit into your busy lifestyle?

Fitness and nutrition have always played a big part in my life. Growing up, I played countless sports, so staying active has always been part of my routine. Lately, I've been enjoying classes at the YMCA, as it's super close to my house, and I can conveniently sign-up online. Since I’m working from home, it’s a great excuse to incorporate movement into my day, and it helps regulate my nervous system and boosts my mental health.

Okay so, I’m asking everyone this because I’m nosy…What are 3 non-negotiables in your morning? Do you have a routine?

Yes, I try to keep a consistent morning routine with 5 minutes each of reading, journaling, and meditation. Oh, and my number 1 non-negotiable is caffeine! (...and hydration).

How do you manage work-life balance? What advice would you give to a fellow entrepreneur or side hustler looking to increase their work-life balance?

Trial and error! To be completely transparent, I'm constantly editing my routine to maximize productivity. It’s a balancing act of goal setting while also being realistic with my time. I especially feel for my fellow entrepreneurs who are also rocking a 9-5 gig. My advice is to set weekly goals, block off time in your calendar, and have some accountability buddies to keep you motivated. And if you need to, take a break!

Describe your journey or relationship with fitness and nutrition. Has your relationship with fitness and nutrition changed or evolved over the years?

My fitness journey feels like an entire novel! Growing up, I played basketball and rugby competitively, so staying active has always been part of my routine. In my twenties and early thirties, I was super into running and completed a marathon in 2019, which was a pretty cool experience and proud accomplishment.

Lately, I've been getting bored easily, so focusing on workouts I enjoy helps keep me motivated. I usually go for spin, yoga, and strength classes at the YMCA in my city.

When it comes to nutrition, I’m admittedly a bit of a lazy girl. My partner is the chef in our relationship, so he does the bulk of the cooking. When I cook, it’s all about convenience, so I’m the gal reaching for the pre-washed bagged salads, pre-cut veggies, and shredded cheese. I do what I can!

If you’re willing to share with us, what are some of your fitness goals? Have these goals changed throughout your wellness journey?

My main focus is staying consistent with 3-4 workouts per week and challenging myself to use the squat rack more consistently. One day, I'd like to build my upper body strength and do a pull-up on my own!

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you started your wellness journey?

Personally, I wish I hadn’t been so hard on myself in the beginning. I used to feel bad about skipping a day or missing a workout, and it was detrimental to my mental health. Staying flexible, doing workouts that match my energy, and being grateful for my health have improved my wellness journey astronomically.

Has the pandemic affected your relationship with fitness at all? If so, how? If not, why not?

The pandemic taught me how to become more resourceful with my workout routine. Since gyms were closed, I had to find ways to stay fit without having access to equipment. I also really enjoyed The Nourish Note’s online fitness classes, and they gave me a sense of routine and balance during that crazy time in the world.

Resource share - what is one thing you would recommend to other people? Could be anything - a book, podcast, anything for any reason!

When it comes to starting your fitness journey, try a variety of things! Local community centres and gyms have everything from dance classes to meditation, so don’t be afraid to sign-up for something outside your comfort zone. Also, YouTube has countless workouts! My go-to channels are MadFit and Yoga with Adriene.

And if you’re looking for tips on improving your overall wellness, try reading The Little Book of Hygge, a snapshot into Denmark’s favourite pastime. I’ll let you read the book, but it covers how Danes focus on elements of their home and lifestyle to support happiness.
